blog_001Kudos to Jay Robinson of MYPROJECTLOLA and Tracy Kerr of The Design Republic who set up this website. When I approached them six months ago about reviving an older site, I had few clear ideas. All I knew was that I had been driving myself nuts wondering how I was going to stuff more stuff that I should stuff into a single website.

They calmly took my memory stick packed with dozens of images, talked in calm voices, and patted me gently on the back. Clearly they know how to handle artists as well as business clients.

I told them that I wanted a site that would pull in business but also provide a format for the umpteen images that I have captured of Northumberland County. The ones that I have squirrelled haphazardly in misleadingly-named files over four hard drives during the past 15 years.

A few weeks later, I met with Jay and Tracy and — voila! — you can see the results around you. They have done a wonderful job.  The Northumberland Project is well on its way.

I say, “on its way” because there are dozens of galleries yet to post to the The Northumberland Project. An activity I anticipate will continue well into next year.

I started accumulating images of Northumberland County in the Nineties. It was a reaction to my day job. I worked for the Cobourg Daily Star and the Port Hope Evening Guide as a photographer.

Assignments were many and varied during those days. Dug in deep into the community, with wife and child, living just a block from work, I felt I was doing a good job. But artistically I was frustrated seeing my work float up so muddy-looking in the newspaper.

We ran black and white presses exclusively. I needed a break from grainy b+w Ilford film ASA 400.

Before digital, photographers relied on colour slide film to capture the nuances of light and reveal the depth of colours in ways that colour negative film couldn’t. Colour neg film was second cousin.

On a Saturday or Sunday, when I knew the wife and child were well-occupied with weekend activities, I would get up early and head out. Looking for picture adventure.

As a photojournalist I photographed people five sometimes six days a week. I was content to ignore them on my road trips. Or if I didn’t, they were always captured at a distance.

I had no agenda. No schedule. I was simply happy to drive the roads of Northumberland. I would shoot until 2 p.m. or so, knowing the lighting was flat by then  but not caring.

Once digital came along, my enthusiasm was redoubled. Cost of film was no longer a concern.

There has been no method to my passion. The Northumberland Project is no document of the county. It is simply a testament  of one person’s interest in and love of  a unique spot on the planet.
