I visited several photographic galleries and displays in London, U.K. last year. Depending on the display I was bored, intrigued, astounded or envious. After three weeks, I came away resolved. To continue to explore photography beyond its traditional uses.
I have two projects I want to share. The first one is labelled, Messing with Tradition. Bounce over to: Messing with Tradition #1 and Messing with Tradition #2. to see the results. The second project, OMG! Look at These Fu’ked Up People! will be available next week.
Messing With Tradition explores the expressive possibilities of still images when the photographer allows expression to overcome expectation.
Expectation in this case is 150 years of photographic history that expects a still photo will remain still.
Most of the exposures were made at F8, a few at F22, with time settings ranging from .4 to 6 seconds. All images were hand-held.
Standard Lightroom inputs were dialled in when I downloaded the images i.e.; sharpening, lens corrections, minimal noise reduction. Little manipulation has been imposed on the images with the exception of lessening the luminance of a few overly- saturated reds and blues. Only one frame has been cropped. The images are what I saw at the time of capture.
Those not impressed with the gallery will probably see no more than a collection of blurred colours. For me, they are records of emotional and intellectual expression at the moment of capture. A photographer’s brush stroke as it were. My energy, mood and creative direction can be seen in the movement of the capture.

These pics are an homage to colour. During the winter, the sun runs second place to cloudy skies. Because I need light, I gravitate to it especially when it is bright and colourful. Looking at these images I feel I am downing shots in a bar. Shots of pure colour. Pictorial details that slow down comprehension are few. In fact, the lack of context adds spice to their appeal. These are colour blasts with a zing!
How I found myself having this fun is typical of my working style. I was snapping a few pics of the municipality of Cobourg’s Christmas Magic display installed in at the town’s waterfront park. I soon found myself bored. Been there. Done that. Every shot necessitated a tripod. Plus calculations. My images were unrewarding. The empty black spaces surrounding Christmas lights always seem soul-sucking. To make more rewarding captures would necessitate multiple exposures involving twilight captures to grab sky colour that would have to be combined in the computer with longer exposures to nail the details in the light bulbs. While the views would be friendly and comforting, I did not consider the results would be sufficiently dramatic.
In short order, once my decision was made, I went from frozen digits dragging a clunky tripod to zipping around playing jazz tunes with my camera. Even lay down in the snow for a few riffs.
Enjoy the blasts of colour. And come back for OMG! Will You Look at those Fu’ked Up People! Images captured on the streets of London showing the cold-blooded methods of your cellphone’s software. I guarantee you will see people as they have never been seen before!
Post Script: To see the summer equivalent of this gallery look at: Flash Flowers There was less calculation during that frenetic shoot of flowers.
