Most people in Northumberland County, located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, east of Toronto, know me as a photojournalist from the days I worked at the Cobourg Daily Star and the Port Hope Evening Guide — two of the smallest dailies in the free world. And later when the two were combined and came to be known as Northumberland Today.

Under those two early banners reporters and photographers churned out copy and captured shots that served the needs of Port Hope and Cobourg. Two towns that love to hate each other. Five days a week we did an admirable job keeping the citizens informed.

Everybody continued to do a good job, even though the ownership of the papers got flipped a few times, recessionary times took their toll, the two banners folded into one and the newsroom shrunk to a petite size.

Those were busy days. The money sucked but being in the front row of community events, alert to gossip and small town rumour, made up for it.

What sustained, what drove staff each day, was a sense of commitment to and reliance on, the community.

Community. Community. Community. I never knew what the word meant in any sense beyond the urban circle of my friends until I lived in Northumberland.
